Sight is the most important sense we have. It is the greatest gift we have been given and we are lucky if we can see as well as we should. However, the majority of the population still suffers from many eye defects, some of which may be incurable.
I myself suffer from nearsightedness and farsightedness at the same time, which means that I have to wear dioptric glasses and on top of that, my eyes have difficulty focusing. One might think that I should have surgery, but I have worn glasses since the third grade of elementary school, so I am used to wearing them. Glasses are simply part of my personality and I cannot give them up.
However, there are many people in our population who suffer from some form of eye defect. So today I will focus on a problem called cataracts. Specifically, it is a disease that causes the pupil to turn white. Since this eye disease can be caused by a variety of eye defects, it is important to diagnose it as soon as possible.
A Czech app called Eye Chcek can help in the diagnosis. The app works on the basis of recognition from photos, called selfies. A team led by the app\’s developer, Pavel Hřebíček, with the help of ophthalmologist Barbora Žajdlíková, taught the app to recognize cataract patients from 1,600 photos. Currently, the success rate of disease detection is about 98%, which is truly impressive.
If the eyes turn red during the examination, it is often due to poor quality images. Anyway, it is a self-taken picture of a healthy person and there is nothing wrong with it. However, if the eyes appear white or rather glowing white, it is a patient who is ill, and in this case the person should not hesitate for a moment to seek medical attention.
In conclusion, it must be said that this is a very practical application and shows us all that the world would be a better place if at least everyone tried to do something that could help others. This program, which works on a simple principle, is now available worldwide for free. It has therefore been adopted by, for example, Canadians and Mexicans, in addition to Europeans.
