There are many different types of sports today. It is understandable that some sports are more popular than others. One of the more fringe sports is cycling. This is because people do not find it interesting enough.Of course, we meet many cyclists every day. But most of them ride only recreationally. Very few of them are truly professionals and compete in big races. The main reason is that these races get very little publicity.
Sure, there is the Tour de France, but that is basically the only bicycle race that most people know about. But it is only one of many races. The reason for this is the sport\’s lack of media exposure and the fact that it is basically never seen on television.
For example, in ice hockey and soccer you can watch live broadcasts of foreign leagues in prime time, but when it comes to bicycles, there are not even domestic races. There are a few, of course, but they are often montaged and broadcast only on specialized sports channels. In the major news outlets, there is usually no mention of them, perhaps only in the case of really big successes. We hear about field hockey, soccer, and sometimes tennis, but no mention of bicycle racing.
Indeed, there is a reason for that. It is that the audience is basically unappealing. Spectators do not enjoy watching a cyclist ride a bicycle for 30 minutes on TV on a road that changes very little. And if it is cyclo-cross, watching racers ride one after another on the same course will quickly become boring. Television is all about ratings, so it is understandable that they do not broadcast this type of event.
Does this mean that cycling is not interesting? Not really, but it doesn\’t really speak to the layman (most people in front of the TV). So it is one of those sports that only real enthusiasts are interested in.
