The individual income tax system is quite complicated for the layperson, so it is not surprising that many people do not take advantage of all the tax optimization options allowed by law. At tax time, which is at the end of March for many working people, it is possible to claim deductions that allow them to recoup a relatively good portion of the amount deducted from their paychecks throughout the year. However, all you need to do is ask for receipts for expenses you have already paid.

Donating blood, hematopoietic cells or organs is encouraged by the government, allowing one to claim a deduction on one\’s income tax. For each blood donation2,000 CZK is deducted from income tax. For more complex blood donations, such as organ or bone marrow donations, a deduction of CZK 20,000 per donation is available.

If you purchased a house or apartment with a mortgage, be sure to claim the interest deduction from your tax bill. You only need to submit a statement of your mortgage account and cannot claim interest that exceeds a total of SEK 300,000 per year.

Additional pension insurance is a common benefit offered by many employers. If you contribute more than SEK 12,000 per year (or more than SEK 1,000 per month) to your pension, this amount can be deducted from your taxes, saving you several SEK.

The state also supports those who contribute to the public good. If you donate at least SEK 1,000 to a local shelter or charity and have proof of this, be sure to include it on your tax return; remember that if you make very large donations in a year, this tax credit is also capped at 15% of your tax base.
